Rowan Green Fiber Arts

Rowan Green became fascinated with the fiber arts when he learned to spin yarn on a drop spindle in 2001. From there, he also learned to sew, weave, knit, and dye yarn. He combined his passions for fiber arts, natural fibers, and ecology into his sewn recycled cashmere fingerless gloves and wool hats which he sold at Pike Place Market from 2008-2014. Rowan became known for his creative uses of previously loved natural fibers and found objects, bold color combinations, and skillful free-form machine applique. He closed his market business to focus on a new career as a professional gardener and environmental educator, and earned degrees in sustainable agriculture, education and Irish studies, moving to Olympia in the process. After graduation he was accepted into Olympia Farmers Market as a craftsperson, where he sells his recycled cashmere, handspun yarn, and hand dyed commercially spun yarn. Rowan particularly enjoys textile history and archaeology, and utilizes the interplay of ancient and modern techniques to push the envelope of fiber arts as a living craft and functional art. Rowan teaches hand spinning and dyeing at Arbutus Folk School in addition to classes, historical talks and demonstrations out in the wider community.
