Welcome to blue-and-white textile handwork from Japan. Japanese traditional natural Indigo dye that explores the color blue on the fabric or yarn – as cotton, hemp, silk, wool or rayon. The poetic Japanese sensibility regarding indigo is something one experiences in the culture, the aesthetic, history and even in the language itself. Cloth dyed with indigo has been dated as early as 2,500 B. C., and the color blue has been associated with royalty of divinity in many cultures, from ancient Egypt to Guatemala and Norway.
Levi Strauss made first jeans for the gold miners in California sometime around 1870, and the word Aizome (Indigo dye) was already mentioned in Japanese history about 1,500 years ago. Color blue has never faded from our life and is still shining today. The fact that indigo is the only dye in the plant kingdom that is colorfast and will dye both vegetable and animal fibers has contributed to its value throughout time.
